Is SEO = backlinking ?

You said it correct, Backlinks are hell difficult to generate, and so Search engines are giving very importance to backlinks to rank your site. Backlinks are nothing but a link back to your website from any other websites, articles, blog comments, videos, Press release , Forums etc etc.  So by a backlink to your site , it means that you have been recommended by other site and it adds value to your website, and so quality (and quantity) of backlinks are very important too.

Are all backlinks good for me ?

No & Yes. Why No because if you build 1000s of backlinks within a week the search engine will know that it is artificial. Why Yes because diversified backlinks from different websites are very important and getting backlinks in regular interval is very very important for your website.

I have heard about follow and no-follow links , what is it ?

Follow links are more important for SERP as it passes the link juice or benefits from the referring sites to you. No-Follow links are less important but it is also necessary for balancing your efforts and making it natural.

How to find number of backlinks I have ?

Yahoo explorer is one way to do that but Yahoo being a search engine they don’t provide details of all the backlinks available for a site because it may help bad guys to manipulate. There are many online tools available to check backlinks, few of them are iwebtool and backlinkwatch.


Seems like this is really expensive ,  can I do it manually instead of tools ?

Yes , it is expensive, any SEO tools you consider, they are expensive.
